Lot# 742. S/N 20867S110537. Red/black vinyl. Odo: 23,926 miles. 350-ci 375-hp V8, 4-bbl, 4-sp. Fresh restoration of a vintage racer. Described as having much history and log books from Lime Rock, Pocono, Sebring, Mid-ohio, Mosport and Ontario. 9-inch Ford rear end, roll cage, no safety harnesses. Cond: 3.
Restoration removes important patina that I'd rather see. The logbooks will indicate when and where it ran, but there was a distressing lack of names associated with the car. This could have been a good buy for an aspiring racer, but has it been a race car all its life?
Lot# S139. S/N J59S106469. Roman Red & white/white/black vinyl. Odo: 33,104 miles. 283-ci 230-hp V8, 4-bbl, 3-sp. Chipped paint, torn top, chrome reverse wheels missing hubcaps in front. Decent bumpers and trim, glass starting to delaminate slightly at corners. Worn vinyl seats, frayed carpet, torn headliner. Exterior in better shape than interior. Cond: 3.
You could have hopped in and driven this convertible away immediately, but if show quality is what you wanted, this ’59 required an additional substantial investment. This fair sale price was just the beginning.
Lot# 536. S/N 40837S100544. Maroon/black leather. Odo: 40,576 miles. 327-ci 300-hp V8, 4-bbl, 4-sp. The 172nd coupe made for ’64. Older repaint with custom pinstripes. Slight crack starting at rear inboard corner of driver’s side headlight opening. Rechromed bumpers, replaced easily removable trim and emblems. Blah, dirty, and greasy undercarriage with older stock-style exhaust system. Heavier rippling of original seat leather, original carpeting fits poorly along console sides, heavily worn center console pad. Hurst shifter, factory AM/FM radio, modern CD player under glovebox door. Cond: 3.
There wasn’t a stock maroon in 1964, so buffing out someone else’s interpretation of body enhancement won’t get you a stock car. Despite that, this was still a pretty good driver, and if someone really doesn’t like the paint, it can be redone without getting too far into the car. Bought well as a driver.
Lot# TH236. S/N 194376S118798. Black/black leather. Odo: 35,420 miles. 350-ci V8, 4-bbl, 4-sp. Originally Milano Maroon with standard black vinyl upholstery. Good repaint, serviceable original weather seals. Mostly reproduction trim, older rechromed bumpers, modern reproduction simulated knockoffs. Fitted with a ZZ3 crate engine with Edelbrock intake and Carter AFB-style carburetor. Original-style replacement a/c compressor, Doug Nash 5-speed manual transmission. Reskinned seats in leather with repop door panels and dash pad. Repainted interior, original trim somewhat dull and dinged. Cond: 3-.
If you really wanted to take this car back to stock, it wouldn’t be too monumental of a task—but you’ll never have a numbers matching powertrain unless you have a set of stamps in the proper fonts. At this price, I certainly hope it was bought as a runner with all sins well known to the buyer.
Lot# 690. S/N 194379S700172. Dark green/black vinyl. Odo: 56,245 miles. 427-ci 400-hp V8, 3x2-bbl, 4-sp. Equipped with aftermarket sidepipes, American Racing Torque Thrust wheels, ps, and pb. Aftermarket stereo, fair paint and body fit, OK interior. Decent chrome, white letter Goodyear tires. An excellent hot rod driver ’Vette. Cond: 3+.
This looked like a decent driver and was well bought at the bottom of its price range. Likely to be very loud with those pipes, it crossed the block first thing Sunday morning. Ouch!
Lot# 965. S/N 1787L8S903065. Black & silver/glass/silver leather. Odo: 77 miles. 350-ci V8, 4-bbl, auto. As-new outside, with less than 100 miles. Body and paint spotless, panel gaps factory. Some light wear to the blackout trim at the rear window. Inside shows wear to driver seat only. Cond: 1-.
These cars could once be found at almost any large sale, but their numbers are thinning, and they are becoming harder to find. This one had very low miles and an excellent look, and the price paid was market correct for now.
Lot# S19. S/N 1G1YZ22J6S5800052. White/black leather. Odo: 11,325 miles. 350-ci 405-hp fuel-injected V8, 6-sp. Paint crack in headlight door, some light patina to leather seating. Windshield chipped in several places. Looks like an 11,000 mile car should. Last year of ZR-1 production. Cond: 2.
The ZR-1 option list price was $31,258 on top of the $36,785 base Corvette in 1995. New special-edition cars are a great way to lose money, and buyers in the market for a ZR-1 have plenty of low-mile examples to choose from. With that in mind, it might be safe to say the ZR-1 has become the best Corvette bargain out there.
Lot# 398. S/N 1G1Y223J8L58008893. Black/black leather. Odo: 5,300 miles. 5.7-liter 375-hp fuel-injected V8, 6-sp. Essentially a new car in climate controlled storage all its life. Factory-new aside from a new battery and new oil filter. Shiny extra wheels included. Cond: 1.
ZR-1 owners may be holding out hope after the $1m price paid for the first 2009 ZR1 at B-J this year, but for now this is bang on high book for the early ’90s super ’Vette—about $20,000 less that they cost new. There are lots of these around, and they conjure up memories of those 1976 Eldorado "last" convertibles.
Lot# F28. S/N 1G1YY32G045111835. Blue/light gray cloth/light gray leather. Odo: 37,504 miles. 5.7-liter 350-hp fuel-injected V8, 6-sp. Good paint shows only minor wear, top as-new. Loose ashtray door, light dirt and wear on carpet, dirty interior HUD. Clean engine compartment, unmarked chrome rims. Cond: 2.
Not in bad shape overall, but still just another late-model 37,000-mile used Corvette. A fair deal all around.
Lot# S155. S/N 1G1YY22G7X5113337. Black/black leather. Odo: 16,960 miles. 435-ci 500-hp fuel-injected V8, 6-sp. Exterior paint and panel fit very good, aftermarket rims and tires unmarked. Engine compartment very clean, interior shows no wear whatsoever. As-new inside and out, owned by Chip Miller of Carlisle Events. Cond: 2.
The Mallett Corvettes offered lots of bang for the buck, and while this one had some miles on the clock, it was in good shape overall. Offered at no reserve, and correctly valued for its condition and performance.
