Ten Most Expensive C4s
1988 Callaway Corvette Twin Turbo
Company: Barrett-Jacksons
Location: Scottsdale, AZ
Date: January 22, 2004
Sold at: $221,400

Lot# 685. S/N 1G1YY2180J5109700. Silver/black leather. Odo: 1,983 miles. 350-ci. Known as “Sledgehammer”, this very car was tested by every automotive magazine with a readership of over 10,000 in the late 1980s, with Car & Driver testing it to a top speed of 254.76 mph. Some of the fiberglass modifications (mostly the NACA hood ducts) are developing cracks where the joined the original bodywork. Original paint is holding up quite well for the years and exposure to 250-mph bug splats. Interior mods feature 5-point racing harnesses and roll bar, wear is commensurate with miles indicated. Undercarriage is a venerable engineering lab, with almost every square inch covered by some sort of equipment. 4 Supertrapp mufflers help to create a sound unlike any C-4 out there; lumpy yet somewhat refined, but a somewhat uneven RPM at idle. Runs out quite well for a car that has been a museum queen for over a decade (without an ECU in it so no one would be tempted to “test it out” while on tour). Cond: 3

Perhaps the most famous C-4 Corvette of all time (for whatever that’s worth), this is the car that not only put Reeves Calloway on the map for good, but helped show that the C-4 was more that just a pimpmobile. One-off rules of engagement for pricing and value apply.

1991 Chevrolet Corvette Calloway LM
Company: Barrett-Jackson
Location: Scottsdale, AZ
Date: January 22, 2004
Sold at: $189,000

Lot# 684. S/N 1G1YZ23J5M5801985. Red mettalic/tan leather. Odo: 3,463 miles. 350-ci. 6sp. 350 V8, 6-sp. One-off bodywork, of the two Twin-Turbo ZR-1 SuperSpeedsters they built. Overall like-new condition commensurate with miles indicated. Only signs of usage are a few light scratches on the paint and front air dam, tire-tread feathering, and light engine-room dust. Cond: 2+

While the aesthetics are subject to the viewer’s taste (a combination of 1980s boy racer and new Millennium tuner), performance goes beyond sufficient. Like all one-offs, value is entirely based upon at least two bidder's desire to pay to have one of one.

1991 Chevrolet Corvette
Comapny: Mecum Auctions
Location: St. Charles, IL
Date: June 24, 2005
Sold at: $155,000

Lot# S46. S/N 1G1YY3384M5116978. Black/peach. Odo: 4,137 miles. 350-ci. 400-hp. 6-sp. This Callaway Twin-Turbo Speedster is one of 10 built. Dirt on seat bolster and worn leather by the parking brake. Delaminating edges on windshield. Cond: 1-

402 hp doesn't sound like a lot today, but in 1991 this was impressive. Original MSRP was $186,625. The dollar cost per mile driven is also impressive. Said to be 1 0f 12, and formerly owned by "Titanic" director James Cameron, this car sold in 1999 for $110k. Well sold.

1986 Chevrolet Corvette
Comapny: Barrett-Jackson
Location: Palm Beach, FL
Date: March 19, 2004
Sold at: $86,400

Lot# 383. S/N 1G1YY6789G5900072. Yellow/black leather. 350-ci 5-sp. Part of GM show car collection. Real Pace Car driven at Indy by Chuck Yaeger. Very cool combination light bar/seating area on rear decklid is designed so convertible top will still be functional. Paint shows scratches on rear deck lid, Goodyear Eagle VR 50 radials. Lots of wear to drivers seat, bolster is flattened in places. Cond: 3+

One of the three built for pace-car duties at the 1986 Indy 500, not a replica. Presented at the auction by General Motors--a pretty good authority to verify its originality. About 5 or 6 times what you would pay for a replica pace car of a similar vintage, and this one was worth every penny. True history, not just a facsimile.

1996 Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport
Comapny: Mecum Auctions
Location: St. Charles, IL
Date: June 15, 2007
Sold at: $80,850

Lot# S93. S/N 1G1YY3252T5600458. Blue & white/red leather. Odo: 6,062. 350-ci 330-hp fuel-injected V8, 6-sp. Excellent paint, nice glass and top, interior factory-fresh. Completely as-new inside and out. Cond: 1

The Grand Sport package (RPO Z16) cost $2,880 on this car and was limited to 1,000 units. 190 convertibles were built with this package, and even fewer of those were ordered with the optional red leather interior. Even considering how nice this car was, this was crazy money for any ’96 Corvette.

Lot# S100. S/N 1G1YY2252T5600637. Admiral Blue & white/red leather. Odo: 168 miles. 350-ci 330-hp fuel-injected V8, 6-sp. Dealer prepped, but carpeting still has a clear plastic protective sheet over it from the factory. Several light paint chips detected on nose, otherwise paint is as applied at Bowling Green Assembly. Engine compartment appears basically unused. All assembly line inspection decals and markings are as new. Interior has more dust than wear. A new 11-year-old car. Cond: 1

It’s not that unusual to find a near mint Grand Sport on the marketplace, however this was one of 217 fitted with the more visually striking red and black leather interior. These usually top out in the $45k to $50k range, so everyone was more than a bit surprised to see more than 3 bidders take it over $60k. It took awhile, but it even kept going past its $63,500 reserve. Sold exceptionally well. One of the only "instant collectibles" I’ve seen actually make someone money.

Lot# S534. S/N 1G1YY2251T5600042. Blue & white/red. Odo: 1,890. 350/330, FI, 6-sp. Mileage claimed to be actual. Fitted with a high power LT4 engine. Showroom new all around, with no visible wear. Cond: 1

Big stickers on the glass read: "Signed by Zora Arkus Duntov" and "Only one of these signed by him." Does that really work like a signed baseball? With a sticker price new of $44,569, I'd say yes, in this case it did. But when you then figure for inflation, plus all the expenses related to storing a car for ten years.... This was all the money.

1990 Chevrolet Corvette ZR-1
Comapny: Mecum Auctions
Location: St. Charles, IL
Date: June 15, 2007
Sold at: $60,375

Lot# S9. S/N 1G1YZ23J4L5803015. Black/black leather. Odo: 111 miles. 350-ci 375-hp fuel-injected V8, 6-sp. The first year ZR-1, still new in box. $60,600 sticker on window. Bloomington Gold certified, no wear noted anywhere. One of 3,049 built. Cond: 1

Stay with me now as this gets confusing... First bid as a group alongside lots S10, S11, S12, S13, and S14 to a no-sale $305,000. Later offered individually to see if the total would be higher. This crowd was likely the seller's best chance at a high sale price, and that's exactly what he got at over $60k—but he's still $300 in the hole if he paid sticker for the car in ’90, not including inflation.

Lot# S10. S/N 1G1YZ23J1M5801885. Steel Blue/blue leather. Odo: 127 miles. 350-ci 375-hp fuel-injected V8, 6-sp. A 2nd year ZR-1, still new in box. No condition issues noted, interior still wrapped in plastic. Window sticker shows $65,638. One of 2,044 built. Cond: 1

All ’91 Corvettes were restyled with similar rectangular taillights to the ’90 ZR-1, but the ZR1 package still included wider rear panels to allow for 11-inch wide rear wheels. Likely driven from the dealer to the seller's garage, and not since. This price reflected the current market for these cars, which is still lagging behind their sticker prices when new.

1992 Chevrolet Corvette ZR-1
Comapny: Mecum Auctions
Location: St. Charles, IL
Date: June 15, 2007
Sold at: $60,375

Lot# S11. S/N 1G1YZ23J1N5800432. White/white leather. Odo: 56 miles. 350-ci 375-hp fuel-injected V8, 6-sp. A 3rd year ZR-1, also still new in box with no wear whatsoever. Never titled, window sticker reads $66,818. One of 502 built. Cond: 1

Few changes were made to the ZR1 package in ’92, including \"ZR-1\" badges above each side fender vent. Bid to $57,500 initially, then sold at the same price as S9 and S10. Another market price for an unused example.
