At the age of 16, back in St. Charles, Illinois, Daniel Grunwald’s father told him he could have the family car—a broken down 1959 Morris Minor—if he could get it running. $300 got it back on the road, for a little while. That car was replaced by a ’56 Chevy, and then a ’57 Chevy without an engine. Somewhere in there, the automotive disease took hold, and has yet to be cured. Current vehicles in Dan’s collector stable include a 1949 Chevrolet pickup, a 1964 Pontiac LeMans Convertible, a 1966 Nova, a 1967 427 Corvette coupe, a 1970 454 Corvette, a 1939 BMW R-12 motorcycle, and a 1971 Triumph 650. Dan’s field of expertise includes Corvettes and American muscle cars, along with a smattering of British steeds. Dan says that the best part of being an SCM analyst is "seeing these incredible automobiles, and meeting really great people who have encyclopedic knowledge. Most of those people are willing to share their knowledge and stories with me. Every day is a learning experience." And what’s the worst part of being an SCM analyst? "Having to kneel down and crawl around looking under 50 or more cars in a weekend, and then having to walk around using those same knees. Also, not being able to own those great cars." Dan is married to Martha, and has one daughter Kelly, and a son-in-law, Jeremy.
B. Mitchell Carlson grew up in rural Minnesota, where he developed an early interest in trucks, school buses, and tractors. His automotive interests were further refined while a member of the U.S. Air Force, stationed at Minot AFB, North Dakota, and Sembach A.B., West Germany. He has been an auction correspondent for Old Cars Weekly since 1990, and is on the National Price Advisory Board for Old Cars Price Guide. He is also a pricing consultant to Kelly Blue Book, in addition to having regular columns about International trucks for Vintage Truck and Red Power magazines. He is a lifetime bachelor, but says he "would make a decent catch for a rich beautiful woman who could afford me." The scope of the expertise he brings to SCM can be appreciated through his own collection of cars, currently standing at a baker’s dozen (the vast majority of which actually run). They range from a 1939 Packard Eight sedan, a 1942 Ford GPW, three International trucks (1939 & 1947 pickups plus a 1967 Scout V8), a 1962 Corvair Monza convertible (his first solo restoration; think of it as a first child), the "Gray Egila" 1965 Corvair Corsa 2-door hard top, a 1970 BMW 2800 CS, a 1978 Lincoln Continental Mark V Diamond Jubilee Edition, a modified 1991 Oldsmobile Custom Cruiser station wagon, and a 2000 Whizzer motorbike. This doesn’t include a couple of deceased Corvair Greenbrier vans, which "make lovely parts cars and chicken coupes" out at his storage facility in North Dakota.
Fascinated by anything with wheels from an early age, Colin Comer is the first to admit he’s a full-time car junkie. Moving rapidly through a succession of go-karts and mini-bikes, Colin acquired his first car, an MGB/GT, at 13 years of age. It was a textbook example of a "Fright Pig", and taught young Colin to never buy another car in the dark of night. The MG was restored using tools from his father's woodworking shop. While questionable for automotive applications, Colin persevered, wood screws and J.C. Whitney parts be damned. Colin had the car completed and on the road by age 16, then traded up to an Alfa GTV 1750 (which met its fate shortly thereafter in a collision with a police car). A GTV 2000 was next—a car Colin still owns to this day. The years that followed consisted of restoring, buying, racing and selling whatever interesting cars he could find. Colin estimates he had owned over fifty cars by the age of 20. A career in the automotive world was inevitable. Working at a variety of car dealerships and restoration shops gave Colin real-world skills and knowledge of all things automotive. During this time, Colin also founded his own business, working out of his garage after hours restoring and selling collector cars. After a few years, the business was (nearly) self-sufficient and became Colin's full-time job. Today, Colin's Classic Automobiles enjoys a loyal following and is regarded as one of the premier classic car dealerships in the nation. While well-versed in collector cars, Colin's passion has always been sports and rare muscle cars (even before it was socially acceptable). Some say when your passion becomes your profession it is no longer enjoyable. Colin has the opposite opinion. Being immersed in cars all day long has only fueled his high-octane obsession. Colin maintains an eclectic collection that has been called brilliant, masochistic, insane, and incredible (sometimes all at once). Colin's collection of "keepers" includes an Alfa 750 Spider Veloce, a Jaguar XK 120, a S1 E-Type OTS, a FJ-40 Land Cruiser, a gaggle of Pontiac GTOs, a 69.5 "Lift Off" Road Runner, a Ferrari 246 Dino GTS, original 289 and 427 Cobras, and a selection of Shelby Mustangs (not to mention the collection of mini-bikes, go-karts, and motorcycles). Moments not spent maintaining cars may find Colin vintage racing his Group 6 Trans Am car, participating in vintage road rallies, or attending auctions and shows throughout the year. Colin lives in River Hills, Wisconsin with the long-suffering Jennifer, and a herd of dogs controlled by a parrot named George.
David Kinney, an American Society of Appraisers Accredited Senior Appraiser, currently serves as the Personal Property representative on its Board of Governors. Growing up in suburban Washington, DC, David spent all of his waking hours, talking, reading and breathing everything automobile, much to the chagrin of teachers and other authority figures. Dave's first "real job" was working for Thoroughbred Motorcars as lot boy and gopher, providing him with an opportunity to learn about and even drive Ferraris, Maseratis and Rolls Royces, occasionally with the boss's knowledge. After college, Dave founded Contemporary Classic Automobiles in Arlington, Virginia, and later ran an automotive repair business and multiple automotive parking facilities. Since 1990, David has owned and operated USAppraisal in Great Falls, Virginia, a dedicated automotive-only appraisal firm. Dave Kinney is proud of his association with SCM, and is equally proud of the fact that his articles and auction reports have appeared in every issue of SCM for over five years. David is married to Stella Koch, and together they survive life with Lacota, the world's most cantankerous cat even though they are looking forward to adopting a dog in the very near future. Dave's hobbies include reading everything automotive, theatrical Shakespeare productions and tending to his collection of over 15 vehicles. Even though he no longer plays a contact sport, he still enjoys the local favorite, politics. Dave continues to be bemused knowing that his former English teachers at Williamsburg Middle School, Yorktown High and Park University are astounded knowing that thousands and thousands of people read his writing every month.
Norm Mort graduated from the University of Toronto and became a public school teacher, librarian, and art instructor. His interest in cars resulted in the publication of his first article on MGs in 1985. After taking early retirement from teaching, Norm became a full-time freelance automotive journalist living in a small village in eastern Ontario, Canada. Having written about classic, antique, special interest, hot rod, custom and collectible automobiles for over 30 years, he currently freelances for The Toronto Sun Saturday and Sunday AutoNetDrive Sections, and his work appears throughout the Sun Media chain. He specializes in collector cars, new car and product reviews, road tests, and book reviews. He was one of the first columnists for Canada’s Old Autos newspaper, in which he has numerous columns to this day. He became a contributor to Sports Car Market magazine after a chance meeting with Keith Martin at the Detroit International Auto Show in 2004. Norm also owns CIA Car Appraisals, which has been providing insurance evaluations on collectible vehicles for 15 years. He is also a partner and the Chief Editor in a soon-to-be-launched website known as CarReviewCanada. He currently owns a 1949 Allard M-Type drophead coupe, a 1962 Sunbeam Harrington Le Mans, a 1967 Reliant Regal 21E, a 1981 Datsun 280ZX, and a 1985 AMC/Renault Alliance convertible known as “my baby car” by its principle—his wife Sandy. His latest acquisition is a partially-restored 1958 Frisky Sport that was purchased because it was British, a convertible, and so he can brag that he’s a Frisky fellow.
